MAGIC
power and those too weak to wield it
All races, perhaps bizarrely, start out roughly equal in power. By roughly equal, we mean they all start at Rank E. Ranks are a purely OOC thing. They are determined by post count and basically serve to make sure no one apps as Jenova and immediately tries to throw a meteor at Earth.
Rank E - 0 posts Rank E characters are competent. If they need something basic done with their powers, they can do it. A god of healing could easily heal cuts and bruises; with more effort, they could mend broken bones; regardless of effort, they could not cure cancer. With time/effort, they can accomplish something, but nothing impossible. They are only Harry Potter, not Albus Dumbledore.
Rank D - 20 posts Rank D characters are experienced. Their powers are theirs to wield as they wish, and they can do more or less anything within the scope of reality. A Rank D ghost could appear, disappear, and interact with the real world at will, although possessing a body would be challenging. Rank D characters are Harry Dresdens and Tia Dalmas. They can generally accomplish what they set out to do.
Rank C - 50 posts At Rank C, the mods are more or less willing to trust your good judgment to do whatever you want in the name of a good plot. A Rank C character is not all-powerful, but if you chose terrakinesis as a power, the character is as potent as Toph. Rank C's are Draculas, Castiels, and Ed Elrics. Do not godmod or powerplay, and do not go on stupid power trips.
Rank B - 90 posts Rank B is a reward for activity and loyalty to the site. Rank B characters are living legends, either famous or notorious, or perhaps they have kept their existence a well-hidden secret. Rank B characters are Dr Strange, Davy Jones, and Crossroads demons. Roughly anything imaginable, they are capable of pulling off with enough time, effort, and/or study.
Rank A - 140 posts Rank A is the point where even challenging magical tasks are easy. For a deity, they are approaching the power they had when they were worshipped. Rank A's are Gandalfs, Thors, Sailor Plutos, and Lucifers.
Rank S - 200 posts Okay, now we're getting absurd.
Every character may start with up to three powers. The powers 1) must make sense together and for the race/character, and 2) cannot be absurd. Omnipotence is not a valid power for rping.
Racial quirks, such as faeries feeding on dreams, do not count as a power. Racial advantages, such as vampiric super strength, need to be bought as a power.
Alternatively, a character may start with training in a skill in place of a power, such as computer hacking, sword fighting, or whatever might be applicable. Having a skill as a power implies superhuman proficiency. For example, Tony Stark has Engineering, and Hawkeye has Archery.

SPELLS
schools of magic
Most anyone can practice magic. Sometimes, all you have to do is read a few lines of Latin aloud. That's not a mage, that's a monkey performing a cute trick.
A spell-casting character at Rank E begins with mastery in only one school of magic. It reflects careful study and practice of the school's associated spells. For each rank they earn, a spell-caster may choose to specialize in an additional school of magic.
Schools are not cut and dry. They may overlap and intersect.
Warding - Protective magic, often used to create magical barriers, negate other spells, harm trespassers, or even banish ghosts. Wardens are most known for the ability to enchant talismans and charms with protective properties.
Healing - Magic specifically used to heal wounds, purge diseases, and strengthen a person's body beyond human potential. Healers are often called on to intercede when sleeper doctors fail.
Scrying - Divination magic that is used to see into the past, present, and future. It is used to find hidden people or things, to observe past events, and for prophecy.
Alchemy - Alchemists change the property of one item to those of another. They may conjure water from air, transmute lead into gold, or brew a whole variety of potions for any occasion.
Necromancy - Necromancers receive a lot of bad rep. Many are truly depraved deathpriests that control zombies. Other practitioners of necromancy are actually exorcists, those that help bind and banish undead.
Glamour - Illusion magic is often favored by the fae. Such magic deceives either the mind or other senses. It is used to charm the unwary and to create phantasms and disguises.
Voodoo - Hex magic that manipulates good and bad luck, often performed with poppets are other focuses. Voodoo is associated with curses, but it can also be used for blessings.
Shamanism - Primal magic channels natural energy. It is used for weather and earth manipulation, and it can also be used for minor healing and divination.
Assault - Commonly known as black magic, assault spells serve one purpose: damage. While a sorcerer's magic is effortless, a mage can whip up a decent fireball too with a good incantation and a handful of ash.
Thaumaturgy - A bit of a rogue school, thaumaturgy covers artificing. The closest magic approaches technology, thaumaturges can create golems and other magical contraptions.

FORTUNE
smiles upon us all
Money is earned through rping. You receive $10 per IC post. It's easy.
Money can be spent on assets. Assets range from items of power to friends in high places.
Favors are earned every twenty posts. They allow you to go above and beyond what your rank, powers, or assets allow you to.
By spending a favor, a Rank C character use their powers on a Rank B level for five posts. They effectively go super saiyan.
By spending a favor, your character can defy the scope of their powers for a single action, provided it makes sense. For example, a character with super speed may run so fast that they travel backwards through time.
By spending a favor, a character can temporarily use HALF the value of one asset for another, provided it makes sense. For example, a character with Wealth IV may temporarily gain Apothecary II.
By spending a favor, a character can also simply have events go their way. This requires discussion and negotiation with the person you're RPing with (you may ALWAYS turn a favor request down, but it's nice to be a good sport), but it can be spent on anything: a random encounter with just the right deity, good luck with a pretty boy/lady, escaping certain doom, etc.
HIDDEN in plain sight is a modern-day supernatural noir game set in New York City and sprawling the rest of America. Magic is real, and so are angels, ghosts, gods, vampires, and witches. It doesn't matter if you believe in them, because they're coming for you either way.
