"Come 'eeere lil' kitten," cooed Hali as he looked around the abandoned objects of the alleyway: boxes, wood pallets, and other half-broken, half-useless oddities. She could have sworn she had seen some sort of feline slink away into the shadows... where had it gone? It must be cold outside in the snow on its own.
Hali was in a similar situation at the moment, but at least he had a jacket to keep himself warm and a place to sleep at night protected from the wind... And if this stupid cat would just come out and stop running away, it could have those things too! Bah, stupid animals. They never know what's good for them.
The flickering movement of a shadow caught his eye. Around the corner? "Kitten?" he asked curiously, though without a shred of fear, as he peeked around the side of the building, oblivious -- stupidly, perhaps -- of the danger darkening alleyways could pose for someone so easily mistaken for a helpless young girl.

There were monsters out here in the night. People with knives, guns, and all sorts of things. It's a dangerous world for a child.
It's a dangerous world for a cat. But it's an even more dangerous world for a little girl, and that's why Mittens has to pause for a moment to turn around and consider the fact that there is a child, alone, on the streets of New York, at night. He may be old, but he's not senile. He leaps up on a trash can, watching her from the dark.
"It's very dangerous to be out here alone, little girl," the cat says, tail twitching.
