Eva was born in upstate New York, to a mother and a father. All of them were sleepers - though, if that term was spouted at Eva she'd look at the being voicing it funny. She still is one, after all. And if she had a say in it, she would remain one. Firmly.

Because everyone knows the supernatural doesn't exist. It can't exist.

When her brother had been born, she'd actually been excited. Happy even. She wouldn't admit to that today.

It all started out just fine, until Alex got so angry one day and next thing she knew she'd hit the world and down was up and everything was jumbled but he hadn't even touched her but no that was impossible-!

After that, she couldn't even look at him. It wasn't long before their parents broke into fights, wasn't long until her family dissolved. But, oh, they weren't to talk about Alex's condition, not ever. It did not exist (not unless they wanted to talk about it, to blame him). And it was up to Eva to be the normal one, because god forbid if both of the kids wound up like this, what would they even do.

It wasn't long before Alex wasn't allowed out often. Eva was always relieved for the time safe apart.

When she was fifteen, she said something that made Alex mad and he broke her arm without even moving and-

When he ran away, she didn't even blink. She knew she was supposed to worry (and maybe a part of her, just a part, did). She know she was supposed to be sad, the way people talked, the way her parents acting. But she felt little else but relief.

The family didn't fix itself when Alex left, but she was safe again.

When she could, she left. She did not look back.

And she wasn't about to let any of them define her. So she worked hard at her grades, got a job she could tolerate, got signed up with a university. Tried to ignore the piling debt by signing up for scholarships. Aimed big, PhD.-big. Then she decided to just make sure she could practice, make sure she could help kids. Make sure she could do what was in her power to keep what happened to her from happening again.

She's made a bit of headway, more than she thought she would. But not enough. Never enough. Because sometimes she looks over he shoulder and could almost swear she's seen him ...
