Well this was different. Someone brought a cat into the shop with them and was now asking if she talked just like his did. Or maybe he was talking about another cat entirely, but really if he had met one already he couldn't be a sleeper right? She sent her message up to Varnock with a tentative Waker tacked on as she moved into the hand petting her. "Only to those who ask nicely. My name is Ellen, welcome to the sop."
Varnock came silently down the stairs and opened the door behind the counter to view the scene. He wasn't surprised that Ellen had taken a risk by talking to the boy, but he would have preferred she hadn't. Of course she never listened unless it mattered so he had long ago given up trying to reign her in. "Welcome to Acerbi's Antiques. Can I help you find anything?"

Well. Seems like Mittens really knew what he was talking about. "Hello, Ellen," and there's a smile on his face as he strokes her spine. "I'm Alex, and that's Mittens, and--"
The door opens and Alex jumps. Okay. Time to deal with people. Can't he just let Mittens do it?
I'm not going to, the cat says flatly, now washing his face with a paw. With a sigh, Alex glances up at Varnock, still petting Ellen.
"My cat said this place could be... well, useful." It's a strange thing to say, but Mittens informed him multiple times that this shop was safe and would understand. "He... said to start by asking for uh, something that could help with telepathic... dexterity? Something sturdy. Like, a piano but not really a piano, but... Well, I'm not sure. He'd tell you himself but he's not talking."

Ellen happily moved with the hand petting her as her master came down to speak with Alex. She was quite happy to be getting attention from someone who knew their way around a cat. "Nice to meet you Alex and Mittens. Nice to see another cat lover floating around."
Varnock smiled and gestured around his shop at the many things in it. "I can actually help with that. A simple reversing of wards that I know of should change dampening of psychic energy to an enhancement of it. I can place that on just about any object you wish though, but the size will change the power. Best case scenario I can do it to a book you can carry around with you and strengthen the book for a bit extra. Otherwise I can get you a necklace of some sort for portable focuses. If you want something to increase it over time by using it to focus your mind I can do that to a piano, but the transportation costs would be a bit up there." He finished his list off with a shrug as just about anything you pleased could have the needed wards placed on them

Most of that flew over Alex's head, but the last part did catch his attention.
"Wait, what?" He stops petting Ellen for a moment, staring dumbstruck at the shop-keeper. "Did you just say-- fitting a piano in a book? How-- what-- how does one even do that?"

Varnock laughed and waved his hands a bit in a motion to dispel the thought. "No no no. I mean a book that is warded to help OR a piano that can be played for long term increases. Fitting a piano into a book would require some sort of magic that would take someone with the same magic to use it."
Ellen flicked her tail towards Alex's hand a few times to prompt the petting to continue as she took a moment to stare at this 'mittens' fellow.

"O-Oh." Well. He's not quite sure if he can manage to take a piano home. Those are a bit big. "The... The book might be helpful. Or maybe, if you have books..." Alex pauses. "One that can help-- oh, sorry," he pauses mid-sentence, from the usual forced awkwardness of Alex being polite, and continues petting Ellen, "Well, uhm. The thing is, I'm... Ehr, gosh, you really talk about it like it's nothing."
Mittens stares back at Ellen, eyes half shut. He yawns, then speaks up, "Honing natural-born talents. That is what you are doing. And we are seeking anything that can help with enhancing and honing them."
Alex puffs out his cheeks. He could have said that! Maybe after a bunch of beating around the bush...

Varnock nods and shifts himself so he was addressing Mittens as well as Alex. "I can easily offer an instrument of some sort that when played would enhance the mind over time. Would be a nice excuse to learn an instrument as well. That would be longer term with higher rewards though. Otherwise I can offer a trinket to give quick power ups that won't be noticeable once you get stronger. The final option I can give you is offering books on the subject of your powers that you want to enhance so you can study on it a bit. Whatever you prefer really."
Ellen spoke up towards Mittens at this point. "You seem rather knowledgeable about the subject. Do you study such things often?"

He pauses. "...I think I'll take the instrument," says Alex after a long moment of consideration. "And if you have books or something on how this sort of thing works..." He bites his lip. "Do I... Do I need to... go into more detail about these... things?"
Mittens's ears flick. "I know a thing or two," he says, unable to reference his time among the living with more than a vague reference. "Magical theory is my forte, though I'm afraid I cannot practice it beyond basic natural abilities."

Varnock moved over towards the back of the room with a careful glance over what he had available. Most of it was a bit... Pricey, to say the least. He would probably need a trade unless he had more money than it looked like. "It would help if you could tell me more. If you are willing to show me a bit that would be even more helpful. Ah but what sort of instrument would you like? I have plenty back here to pick from."
Ellen looked Mittens over carefully. He definitely seemed a bit different than most familiars she had seen. Maybe it was just because he seemed to be in the advanced stages of intelligence like her? "You should come by more often then. It isn't often another familiar comes by that I can talk to, let alone one that knows magical theory. I've learned some things in my time as well after all."

"Something affordable," Alex says flatly. "And, uh, it's probably easier if you hold your arm out... Like, explaining it is weird. Basically, uh... Well, it's like telekinesis but controlled? Uh, yeah..." He lets his vectors extend a few feet, trying to flex each finger. It's not easy, though, since he's had so little practice over the years. Trying to ignore the vectors only made them more difficult to control.
Mittens just treats it as something normal. All cats contain some sort of intelligence and his just so happens to be magical. Of course, it doesn't hurt that he wasn't always feline. "I could do that. I feel as if this shop could be important to... personal things." Mittens doesn't plan on being a cat forever.

Something affordable... That didn't tell him much honestly. Affordable really differed from person to person, but he just decided to stick to the least expensive things he had lying around. As for extending his arm, well he was a bit worried all things considered. Powers varied enough that anything could happen after all and he didn't want an arm made of purple goo. "The least two expensive things I have here is a harp and a guitar. Both would work just fine, but you would have to learn to tune and play them and perhaps purchase new strings for them. What do you mean extend my arm though? Am I reaching for something or is something reaching for me?" He carefully extended an arm and trusted his knowledge of magic to keep him relatively undamaged.
Ellen cocked her head in a way that expressed curiosity. Personal things he says? Was he interested in trying to learn some sort of magic himself? Or maybe he was after a body just as she was. Either way it would be nice to have someone to talk to about it all. "I look forward to that. Two heads are better than one after all. I am quite curious as to what you want to try to learn from a shop that deals in magical goods though."
