The woman who thinks she is his mother smiles vacantly and calls for the check. I do wish you would come shopping with me, she says. Her voice is strained honey. We really need to get your father a birthday present while we still have time. Her hand reaches across the table to rest on top of Nathaniel's folded ones. Her fingers brush lightly against the thin metal bangle, slightly sun warm, on his right wrist. He doesn't flinch.
"I am meeting a friend for drinks after you leave," Nathaniel says. "I have not seen him since he went to law school. It will be nice to catch up. If you want, I can pick Father something up on the way home?" She smiles that distant smile again, and assures him not to worry about it, enjoy his time with his friend. When she finally gathers her purse to leave, he watches her trace her way through the metal chairs and tables on the outside patio of the cafe, her green dress pulled tight over her hips. He notes, almost fondly, that she holds her bag against her chest like a shield.
Nathaniel flags the waiter down, orders a whiskey sour: over ice and hold the maraschino, please.

Glasses, long parka, folders. He pushed his glasses further up the bridge of his nose, where his eyes could focus on the humans that edged past him. Keeping a tight grip on his files, Bastien weaved through the crowd, glancing along signboards and shoplots to identify the cafe he was supposed to meet --
-- there he was, on the patio. The vampire took a small breath, and kept his pace even as he approached the man.
"Hey," greeted Bastien, giving Nathaniel a small, but distinct nod. He sank into the seat before the other vampire, before moving his gaze to the various tables under the shade of parasols all the same shade of white. The folders he held were off to the side, within them notes and documents on the current case he was doing follow-up for.

Nathaniel smiles, as much as any predator can smile. The pulling back of lips, the revealing of teeth, the movement of muscles--it's all perspective. He wants to smile now though, so it's a smile. Maybe a few hours later, it will be a snarl, but now Nathaniel is with one of his most recent sons, and like any good father, he likes updates.
"Busy with work?" he asked. The waiter appeared silently at his side, placing the glass before him. (Nathaniel had frequented this cafe quite a bit since his arrival in New York, and the servers had learned not to disturb him when he was talking. The smart ones, at least.) "I suppose I would find it tedious, but sons ought to surpass their fathers. Congratulations on the promotion, by the way. I am not sure I ever said so in person."
Down half the whiskey sour in one delicate sip, place it back on the table. Millenniums of drinking will do something for your tolerance; Nathaniel wrinkles his nose at how weak the drink is. Alcohol was so much stronger BC era. Pity that they decided to invent the wheel and leave a proper drink at the wayside of evolution, but humans are odd sorts of creatures.

"Not really, but it's not really case season. Give it one more week," Bastien said, smiling slightly in response. New Year's was horrible for any lawyer, with cases involving injuries or angry spouses or even the occasional accidental murder. It was a legal nightmare to sort all of these out, plus copyright arguments and then he'd have to sit down at a library and prove the idea was common enough to not be copyright infringement.
That was a lot, and if possible, Bastien would rather not think about it.
He laughed, quietly, politely. He held respect for his vampire father, quite possibly more than his own birth father who had dropped off the face of the world. "You haven't," he echoed. Nathaniel had congratulated him, but it was on a postcard bearing the image of some mountain or building. (He didn't remember where. Probably Chile.)
"Thank you." He turned to the waiter who had remained just long enough for Bastien to order an iced soda float (he enjoyed cordials, thank you very much), then back to Nathaniel. "Have I new siblings?"

Nathaniel wrapped his palms around the whiskey glass, staring into what was left of the drink as if it could answer his questions.
"You do not," he said. "Not since we last talked. You had a younger sister, very very briefly, an Argentine woman I gave the gift, but she did not take well to our lifestyle, and I took care of her. Sometimes no matter how thoroughly you explain that the world will change, there are those who still cannot live within the new laws."
He shrugged, a minute motion.
"How is V treating you? I have heard they are more bearable than those pedigree-obsessed children at Dracul, but there is very much I do not know about this city. It is distinctly modern and ancient all at once. It smells like the decay of Rome, at the height of glory."

Bastien smiled, but his gaze was on the table. Some vampires, alas, were not cut out to be. The loss of a sibling, at the same time, mattered none to him. He had many, many others that Nathaniel had told him about, and even though he did not seek them out, he was assured that they would aid him should he need them -- like a real family. (Bastien did not quite believe in family, but he believed in his father.)
"V is relaxing," he said, "They allow me to do as I please. I heard that the Ordo is rather ... strict, but they are restrained by strict hierarchy. I believe you already know how V works: The strong survive, as they ought to. Everyone strives forward, for improvement."

"And you have always improved yourself, have you not," Nathaniel echoed. "There are criticisms one can make of you--of us all--and yet they are more than tempered by that simple fact. You have always improved yourself."
His eyes landed once more on the folder.
"Is that a human indulgence of yours, this lawyer game, or a necessary part of the job?" Nathaniel was not quite sure which answer would please him more. This youngest child of his had always been intriguing; a natural day walker, as if somehow Nathaniel's powers over darkness had reversed themselves when his blood came in contact with Bastien's own inner fortitude and he turned. The world was a slowly-turning planet, and there was little left new on it. Nathaniel had learned to amuse himself with the jokes as they came, then, rather than let them pass him by.

A smile stretched Bastien's lips. It wasn't just him, then, who agreed with this ideal. Nathaniel more than likely had to adapt to changing times -- for a vampire to have turned so many would mean a significant time spent living.
He? He was only a sand in the hourglass of time, hardly impressive but present nonetheless. One of many, though.
"Both, I suppose. An interest and a help to my position," he said. "The bar's been helpful in understanding how legal system works. I'm not quite the type to pass judgment on whim and fancy." A small laugh.

"No, you really aren't, are you?" Nathaniel said slowly. "You certainly didn't get that from me. Or at least, it's nothing innate in myself, it's something learned. You, on the other hand. I wonder if there's something changing in my lineage, remnants drifting to the surface after long ages. In a way--a slight way--you remind me of my own maker."
His tongue burned at the words, but his expression didn't change. She was the flame he could not escape, the riddle that perplexed him so many lifetimes later. His own existence was no mystery to him; the world held no curiosity, but as long as she existed, evanescent and unattainable, he was tethered to the earth.
