COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY sites and landmarks |
Columbia University is the school we suggest our college-bound characters and academia-entrenched professors, just for the sake of easy plotting. Its neighborhood Morningside Heights is essentially a college town squished into a big city. On campus, there's a New Age club that primarily includes yoga enthusiasts, but also has a sub-sect of wakers that talk shop in open secret at club meetings, doing their absolute best to weird out the yoga enthusiasts until they leave. The Mu Omega fraternity is also active here, but it's a very hardcore, studious crowd and only dedicated magi tend to join. Philosophy, - Weekly New Age meetings happen in a classroom in the basement of the Philosophy building every Wednesday night at a negotiable hour in the evening. Typically, meetings are nothing special, the exact same sort of social get-togethers sleepers have. However, they chose a basement classroom because sometimes they feel arrogant enough to cast a big spell just to see if they can. Results, good or bad, typically require a great deal of clean-up. Mrs. Irina - Surname unknown, Mrs. Irina is a Slavic (people suspect Russian, but no one knows for sure) witch (or so it is assumed) that lives on Riverside Drive. She divines the names of new waker students, and she never fails to send an invitation for tea and cookies. You're welcome to decline, but she is a knowledgable tutor in all subjects, not just magic. Plus, her cookies are quite good. No one knows why she befriends and mentors students. Most suspect she's just a kindly old lady. Ankh - A dinky little apothecary that sells low-quality spell components for extra cheap to students and anyone else on the ugly side of broke. They also have a small stash of quality materials for regular prices, but most of their business is the shoddy kind. Their holy water might only be half-blessed, but for basic purposes, it'll do. Everyone in NYC knows about the Ankh, so if your character can't supply themselves, it's a good place to go in a pinch.
