Riley spit out the glob of chewed up steak in disgust. It wasn't raw enough, and it tasted old and unpleasant. He wasn't really sure how a vampire diet worked, but he'd really been hoping that he could slowly adjust himself to normal food too. It didn't seem to be working. The vampire stared down at his wasted money and pushed the plate away like a spoiled child. This was ridiculous. Steak was steak, even if he had to drink blood. Couldn't he enjoy the good stuff too? But blood was the good stuff now. Face grim, Riley pondered the difference in his appetite. It wasn't fair that he had to give up his favorite foods just because nothing was the same after he got a taste of 'red gold' (it was a stupid nickname, he knew, but it didn't stop him from using it).
An idea struck him, and the vampire shrunk into his seat while he considered it. The waiters would think he was crazy. Everyone would think he was off if he asked for what he wanted, but maybe it would taste a little better than the steak if it was just by itself....
In a wave of bravery, Riley called the waiter over to him, face tinged in embarassment, and stammered out his request. The man looked at him quizically, then almost knowingly (unless he was just being paranoid), and disappeared behind the door to the kitchen. Did he know what he was, or was he just really comfortable judging him? He couldn't be blamed--it wasn't an every day person that ordered something like that, but it was his last hope of enjoying something almost like real food. He could only hope that his taste buds were still adjusting to the vampiric change. Hopefully they would go back to normal and he could have both blood and normal food in no time. The judgemental waiter slid back through the doors with his order while he thought to himself, and slid it onto the table smoothly.
"There you go, sir. An order of...fried blood." The last two words were pushed out forcefully it seemed, and the waiter wasted no time in rushing back to the kitchen. Riley could see him peeking through the window of the door every minute or so, and stared down at his 'food' in an attempt to avoid eye contact. It looked like burned sludge, slimy and thick, and for a moment he wasn't sure he could stomach it. But the smell wafted up to his nose and made him shudder--it smelled almost like the fresh kind.
"Well, bon apetite." he muttered, sliding his fork into the brown goop and slipping it into his mouth.
It was delicious.[/style]

Shannon couldn't help but deepen her scowl as she spotted the man seated at the table beside her spit out and abandon a barely touched plate of steak. It was times like those when she detested humanity even more. If even a grown man didn't act like, well, a grown man, she wondered how long humanity would survive before they regressed back to chimpanzees and apes.
She let out a slightly audible 'tch' in disgust and turned her eyes away from the immature stranger. Instead, Shannon turned her attention to her own meal that sat in front of her. Rather, it sat beside her computer. And it could hardly be considered a meal. If you considered a cup of coffee a meal, then it was, but otherwise, it was just a plain ol' straight black cup of bitter coffee. The mug rested a safe distance away from her precious computer, forcing her to stretch to grasp it and take a long sip. Her blue eyes then darted down to the spell book that sat inconspicuously in her lap. Hidden by the shadow of the table, she had no fear of prying eyes catching a glimpse at the odd text which she was now transcending onto her computer. Her nimble fingers danced across the keyboard as letters and words materialized across her screen.
But despite her greatest desire to complete the transcription and then slip back into solitude, her found herself distracted again by that man at the table beside hers. With another scowl Shannon spared one glance up from her screen and to the customer. A somewhat flustered looking waiter replaced the untouched steak with a new plate of...something. It was dark, it was slimy, it was utterly disgusting-looking, like a pile of horribly burnt pudding or something or other. It was blood. What was started as a single glance turned into a full-on stare. Shannon's eyes drilled into the strangers plate of blood, and then at the stranger himself. Now just who would order a plate of blood? Well, in a city that bustled with the supernatural, the list was easily narrowed down.
Great, she was never going to finish transcribing the spell book at this rate. Scanning the room quickly, Shannon closed the book and swiftly tucked it into her bag away from prying eyes. Being seated by the window, she poked a finger at the closed venetian blinds that blocked out what was left of the days sunshine and tentatively pulled at one of the slats, letting in a tiny sliver of light into the cafe. Vampires burn. So finding out if the freak who ordered blood was one or not would be a simple, possibly painful, task.
