the world was a strange one, it thought. divided into the magical and non-magical, yet they coexisted as peacefully as they could. it quite preferred the non-magical side of it. being an eleven-year-old girl had its drawbacks.
luce lounged in the comfort of an armchair too large for a child of her age. buried amongst pillows, she sipped a glass of chilled juice while watching reruns of a cartoon on television. the establishment belonged to a family friend, and luce was free to drop by and have a drink or two while her parents weren't around.
she kept an eye on the sliding doors to see who entered; a fae, and then another group of them. they smiled at her. luce obliged.
the television switched to a particularly violent scene of a dog beating up a cat.

sophia never had reason to step into such a posh hotel in life, but found plenty after her first death. nobody really looks at her twice, and she supposes this is how she remained utterly unaware of magical presence in this world in her first eighteen years of life. it's a little harder to notice monsters around her when they still believed in the lively caricatures and cartoons that adults liked to create. their lies would only expose the children to the real danger.
children such as the little girl who sits so contently in the armchair. sophia sits on the larger couch beside her. the girl is not her target, but she does have some time before the man is scheduled to arrive. her eyes flicker to the television, and she thinks of a grumpy little boy who never seemed to have the time for such fantasy. sophia wonders where he is now, whether he learned to feed himself yet.
he could be married by now, with little tykes who would be watching the exact same program that the little girl is watching now. sophia doubts it. he always did have terrible chemistry with women. the image of thalia de luca's furious expression brings a small smile to her face.

absorbed in the mind-numbing cartoon on television, luce neglected the presence of the female who had just arrived. the lounge was a comfortable one, large enough for more than two magical presences, and certainly could hold more than a party of rowdy werewolves. she sipped her juice, pulling back from the straw upon noticing that her glass had run dry.
she half-wished it was an artifact that refilled itself every time it ran empty. luce set it down on the table next to the armchair. the fluffy pillows around her fell to the ground, and she had to replace them. luce knelt on the ground, shuttling the pillows up, then glanced over at sophia. there was another guest, and the family friend had told her not to get in the way of business.
luce offered sophia a small smile, took her glass and clasped it with both hands. it was still pleasantly chilled, and soothed her nerves somewhat. "welcome," said the girl, "can i get you a drink?"

the girl snaps her out of her reverie, but it is not totally unwelcomed. it’s almost a little embarrassing, how easily she was distracted from her work this evening. it’s still early, but best to keep alert.
“...i’m fine, thank you” sophia blinks at her politeness before realizing that it’s probably stranger that a young child is sitting alone in the lobby. she had only intended to sit here quietly, but the silence is getting a tad awkward. “...what channel is this?”
