Varnock had been a bit surprised the first time he had gotten a vampiric customer. He had been further surprised by how different they were than he had been expecting, and Mildred was just as surprising. Once he had believed the stories told by the small part of his family that hunted down vampires and told of the horrors that stole people away in the night. He didn't believe much of that now, or at least he didn't believe they were all like that as they had implied. He wasn't naive enough to suspect that no vampire did things such as that, but current evidence has shown that they are completely, if not more so than most, civilized.
Varnock shook himself out of his thoughts and took another sip of tea. "I'm sure Ellen would appreciate the company whenever you feel like stopping by." He paused for another moment after that. He wasn't sure what was asking too much... He was a man of knowledge that went to great lengths to improve said knowledge. "If it isn't asking too much I would like to know a bit about what times in history you have seen. I'm rather interested to hear about what it was like from someone who was there rather than second or third hand accounts. And please feel free to ask me any questions you have as well. I would feel rude if I didn't offer to answer what I could while asking away at you."

"Well..." The times in history that she had seen. Not her favorite subject, really. She spent much of her time avoiding the thought of all of the things she'd witnessed and experienced. Still, she was in a good enough mood, now that she had some tea (not that that mattered, you know, but it was the thought and act that counted, right?) and good company and she was on better terms with the cat. Perhaps she could help him out. It only made sense that he'd be curious, given who and what he was... though she figured Sleepers would have been curious as well. "Where to start?"
Starting at her birth felt a little personal, for her tastes, but she was born right before what is commonly known as the Black Death struck and killed pretty much everyone she knew and people across her country, her continent. They were old memories, but they were still there. She rubbed a little at her temples, leaning heavily on the table.

Varnock took a moment to think as a book appeared in his hand from a ripple of space out of habit. It appeared to be a history book that fluttered open to a page on its own. "The plague yes? I only know what I've read of it." He paused for a moment and looked up in genuine concern as he eyed the posture Mildred had taken. "We can pass over that point in time if you wish. It can't be an enjoyable memory..."
Ellen had halted her grooming to listen with rapt attention. She seemed content to let Mildred continue with the story even if Varnock seemed worried. She spoke up in a way that could be taken in either direction though. "Please go on. We are both curious to hear more."

She sighed, now moving her arms for a second to stretch them above her head, squinting for a second at the work that it was. She eventually settled her arms again, placing them on the table. There was little here in the manner of etiquette, but hey, she was among friends. Sort of. Plus, it was story time. As the storyteller she was allowed to relax, though her stretching movements were more out of trying to give herself a moment to gather her thoughts than any real stretching of her muscles.
"It all happened very fast, you see," she started. "We called it the 'Great Pestilence' back then. Dad got sick first, but Mother died before him." She tried to say these things like they were just fact, like she had gotten over it centuries ago, people die sometimes and you can't help it, but when it came down to it, there were reasons that she didn't think about it often. "I think he brought it in from the fields. He never forgave himself for the next two days he was alive." She paused again. "It was really gross. There were these big, wart like things... and their fingers started turning black." She eyed her own fingernails placed delicately on the tips of her fingers, painted black for the occasion. Ironic. "I got it, too. It wasn't fun." Glossing over it wasn't what he wanted, but was all she wanted to do. That was okay, right?
"I got turned before I died, but everyone else wasn't as lucky." She made a face. "My sire was a good doctor, but there was nothing he could do. Life was hard for people for a long time because of it. Everyone got really distant... and clean. At least, we told them to... It was hard to convince people it was germs and not, you know, Jews." Those poor heebs. The butt of every joke. "I didn't get too involved in the politics of it all. We spent most of our time traveling the outskirts of the territory." She hoped this wasn't like, information overload, or that she wasn't wording things stupidly.

Varnock listened carefully as she spoke of the plague that had devastated Europe. His family had been hit rather hard during that time as well. Almost lost the entirety of the main branch of the family because of it in fact. That would make her almost 700 then... He really could learn a lot from her since his family was missing quite a few records from that time of history.
"My family has records of being hit by the same sickness, if a few years before some of the other major outbreaks. You weren't in Italy by any chance were you?" 700 years or so though... He made a note to ask if she had any books left from that time that she would be willing to part with. This certainly was interesting to hear though. A doctor as a vampire had a bit of irony to it in his opinion.
Ellen nodded as she spoke up. "They do seem to have some bad luck about being blamed for things don't they? You said the outskirts of the territory, but which territory did you mean?"
This post isn't very good and I apologize for that.

She chose to answer both their questions at once, looking off into the distance. "We did end up visiting Italy, but that wasn't until later." What she failed to mention was that it was later in, you know, vampire time. So... decades later. "We roamed the edge of the, you know, 'kingdom' of England at the time." She was starting to get bored with this line of talk, but she could deal with it. "No one I knew back then survived, besides my doctor." She carefully analyzed her nails again, wanting to avoid too much talk about R, but not wanting to make it too obvious, either.
"Why do you ask, though?" No, it was obvious. "Was your family in Italy at the time?" There was a moment, and she paused. She didn't know if aging worked differently for mages or whatever. With magic, you could make yourself look way young, right? That was sort of what she did, herself. "How old are you, if you don't mind me asking?" She didn't want to offend him, but it was only fair for her to know just what she was dealing with here.

Varnock was almost tempted to take notes even if it would look rude, but he knew Ellen was taking it all down far better than any notes he ever could make. He paused for a moment as she asked him a questions though. He was a bit confused why she had asked his age, but he wasn't one to brush off a simple question like that "My family has almost always lived in or around Italy. We have a home there that most of the family considers an ancestral home or final base of operations. We feel safe there since the place was warded by generations of masters. I'm only twenty six though. No Glamour magic for me."
Ellen twitched her ears and stretched for a moment before speaking. "Varnock's family never really was very adept at Glamour magic. They always focused on Warding of some sort or another for the majority so most are exactly how old they look. Of course there are a few who break this rule with their own brand of magic. I myself have been summoned once before my time with Varnock and am about fifty years of age."
Varnock had a bit of a worried look for a moment before posing his next question. "You never had any trouble with vampire hunters in Italy did you?"

"Fifty cat years?" She asked, raising a brow at Ellen flirtatiously. She was finding it easier to talk to the cat, honestly. Not that he was hard to talk to, no, it was just... She felt a sort of cameraderie with the cat, after all this. Maybe it was just the fact that she was cute and fuzzy. That was probably it. She wished she could take a form like that. Maybe with magic...! But no, that was for a different time.
She waved away his apparant worries abotu vampire hunters. "Rom... My sire, he did, long before I came along. He'd made some friends in Italy by the time he... 'had' me, so we were safe."And boring, she added mentally. Italy was home of the finer things, and R. had always been a fan of them. "Would your family have been the vampire hunters in question?"

Varnock nodded slightly in answer to the question. His family had a small, if dedicated, branch that trained in Assault magic to hunt vampires. He didn't much like them anymore and they returned the feelings of dislike. Of course he almost avoided his home in its entirety. Too much animosity between the branches sometimes. "My family has a small part of it based in Assault magic that hunts vampires. I'm not a big fan of them myself though."
Ellen laughed at the raised eyebrow and gave the cat equivalent of a smile. "Fifty cat years is much longer than you realize. If I was that old I would probably be even older than you. I'm simply fifty human years old. You make it sound like your time in Europe was boring though. Was it? Surely you had some exciting points in your life you would enjoy talking about."

That was good to know. He'd said as much earlier, but still. A bunch of other Varnocks, running around hunting vampires... How droll. She understood the need, though. It was population control. She knew, perhaps better than others of her 'species', that occasionally, vampires just got out of hand. She hated to bring it up, even in her head, but she wondered if that was what ought to be done with the situation with V. Sure, they were causing some changes, some of them good, but...
Even with all her whining about things always staying the same, there was a comfort in that.
"Ah, exciting times." She smiled a little smile, kicking her legs. "The Renaissance," she said, a bit wistfully. "Italy was a beautiful place, even after all those tragedies of the plague." She always felt pretentious talking about those times, especially after the surge of all these art students recently and the 'spiritual' Sleepers who claimed do have been there during that time, but it still held a tender place in her heart... Even if it was a dirty time.
If there was one thing that Mildred loved, it was soap.
"Colonization was fun, too," she confided, "Even if it was dangerous for everyone, including vampires." An acquaintance of hers had been 'lost at sea', so to speak. She shuddered at the thought of drifting around, down at the bottom of the ocean, going crazier and crazier for want of blood. That was the stuff nightmares were made of. "But world history is a little heavy for tea time talk."

He smiled at her wistful expression. Being able to see the Renaissance must have been grand. To be able to see something that shaped art so much in person and live to talk about it... What he wouldn't give to be able to see it all with his own eyes. Maybe someday he would be able to as well? Who knows what advances into magic will appear as time goes on. "It must have been wonderful to see the Renaissance in person. I can only imagine what you must have been able to see and do... You'll have to tell me more about that someday. Records can only go so far when you have someone who was actually there after all."
Ellen was tempted to ask a bit about Colonization as the last time she had been summoned was around then, but she left it off at the comment on world history. "What would you like to talk about then? Far be it from us to make you talk about something you would prefer not to."

"Truly, it was." She knew how lucky she was, really. It was a good time for everyone but Jews. Then again, it never seemed to be a good time for them anyway. Shame, that. "As for what I want to talk about..." She looked around, before scooting her seat out. It took her a moment of standing up, stretching a leg, and smoothing out her skirt again, but she looked around at the books surrounding her.
"I have a couple questions..." She started, slowly. "About magic." She turned to Varnock, a glimmer of excitement in her eyes. "If you don't mind."

Varnock's smile only got wider as her question was processed by his brain. The chance to have an apprentice that wouldn't be dying from age would be a wonderful thing. She would just keep amassing knowledge to give on to others in a way not dissimilar to a book. It was something he was willing to assist in for sure. "I don't mind a bit. Any question you ask I will answer to the best of my knowledge."
Ellen seemed curious as well. It wasn't often her master spoke of magic outside of when it was necessary. Most all of it was written in personal journals stashed away in his mind for future study when he wanted to improve a certain school of magics. This was definitely something she wanted to see.

She swallowed hard. She wasn't quite sure how to word it. R's opinion on such matters was largely negative. As such, she was woefully uninformed about such matters. How things worked, what exactly she was doing, what others were doing... Still, this seemed like the perfect place.
"I have this sort of... thing I can do." She said, a little nervous. "If it's a Sleeper, I can... I don't know exactly how I do it. Or even what I'm doing. I feel like I need to look a certain way to them... and I don't know. I don't say anything to make it happen, but.." That was how magic usually worked, right? Expecto Patronum or whatever? She felt like a dork even talking about it. She didn't even want to mention the other thing that happened, that seemed too much like old gypsy stuff or whatever.

He listened carefully as she spoke and turned the option over in his mind. Really it could be anything. It sounded like some form of appearance manipulation or a telepathic effect on the mind to change how people view you. He really couldn't be sure unless shown. If it was mind based his own powers would resist or block it completely. "Can you demonstrate by any chance? I can't be sure otherwise, but if you aren't comfortable showing me that is fine as well. I'll just list what it could be if that is the case."
Ellen listened and watched as well. As much as he hated to admit it Varnock knew her memory was much better than his now and he exploited that often. Of course now she was using it all for herself to listen to a mage try to teach someone more about magic. It wasn't a common site for her really.
