What was Ellen hinting at? Mildred had a feeling that she had a pretty good idea of just what it was the mischievious cat was driving the conversation towards, but it just wouldn't do. She'd already embarassed herself several times during this conversation, and she didn't want to keep doing it over and over. If the conversation went that way, she had a feeling it would continue.
Still... It was something to think about.
Wait, no, no it wasn't. She really didn't need to be thinking like that, at least not yet.
"That's very true, Ellen," Mildred started, choosing her words carefully. "But it's something that takes lots of... consideration, and careful thought, and lots of trust." She paused. "At least, it should take those things. Some circumstances, of course, are different."Like being on the edge of death already."And those situations don't always turn out so well." A hint of sorrow entered her voice again. "I was once a part of a pair, after all."
No, this wouldn't do. She didn't want to go into R or anything like it. She was a strong independant black woman vampire who don't need no man. Right?
"Anyway, it's a lot to think about for the person being turned, as well. Saying goodbye to death isn't as easy as you might think... at least, for a mortal Sleeper." She supposed that Ellen, as a familiar, might have different thoughts about that.

Ellen gave a little huff as her attempt failed. Looks like Mildred was getting wise to her ways... Maybe she would have to step things up a bit? Nah. It was time to help move this conversation to a finish before both of them end up all mopey. "But you don't want to talk about that right? From the pointed exclusions in your story before I assume you aren't on the best terms. As for consideration and careful thought... Well that isn't as prevalent in some people as you might think." She made a point of not looking at Varnock as she said that.
"Oh? Why would it be difficult to no longer have to worry about death? I know of some of the problems vampires face by being ageless, but there seems to be many more benefits than downsides. And they can die whenever they please if they find a hunter. I know that sounds a tad morbid, but it is true. I know of some that have come to my family for that."

She quietly laughed a little. "I suppose missing death is more a Vampire problem, not anyone else's. I guess you would only feel that sort of longing once you've been turned." Not that she was thinking of Varnock that way, of course. "Still, there's a fear that keeps me from going that route, and it's a fear that dominates most vampire life." Whether her superiors wanted to admit to it or not, they were all afraid of death. That was why they were still here, wasn't it?
She smiled at Ellen. "I guess there is a time and place for those things, and romance is definitely not one." Still wasn't thinking about it. Nope. "Still, I'm glad for the gifts I have from vampirism, and even more so for the chance to watch the world grow." She took a breath, relaxing a little. "I just personally wouldn't wish it on anyone else, myself." She could feel the conversation winding down, and she straightened up, trying to be polite.
"Thank you very much for the tea and conversation, Varnock." She looked back at Ellen again. "And you, as well, Ellen."

Of course many a vampire would turn out of fear of death. Why else would they be here still? Varnock just couldn't comprehend a fear of something so natural though. Maybe it was his outlook from how dangerous his line of work could be? It must have been that or his general look on life. Maybe he should work on that a bit? "I happen to be very glad you have not gone that route and denied me a chance at conversation with you."
Ellen returned the smile with a catlike grin. "But it could be right? You definitely implied as much. Still it sounds like a boon rather than a curse to me, and Varnock as well if what he has said is to be taken into consideration."
Varnock straightened as well once he saw Mildred moving. "The pleasure was all mine. I look forward to the next time we can have tea and chat like this." "As do I. You make sure to come by and chat with me so I don't get bored and 'bother all the customers' like I apparently always do." Ellen turned to look at Varnock who was coincidentally looking away.

She felt herself almost-blushing again. It was stupid, but even little comments like that were nice to hear. Especially considering she hadn't really talked to anyone for a long time, those kinds of things were even rare to her and thus more treasured. She pinched the inside of her bottom lip between a fang and a bicuspid, some vain attempt to keep her focused.
"I'm sure you account for many of his sales." She grinned. "I think you swayed my purchase last time, as well, as misinformed as I was." She pushed herself up, bringing herself to an awkward standing position. "I look forward to coming by more often." Oh, she almost forgot. "Is there a specific day you'd like me to come back in the near future?" She smoothed her clothes out again, the movements near automatic from years of practice.
"Would you care to see me out?" She added, meekly. She still felt a little too out of place to really wander out of the store on her own.

Ellen laughed at that one. A bit of conversation was always good for spurring along a purchase. "You have no idea. I'm glad to know I helped though. We don't often get good conversation and a sale. Usually only one or the other."
Varnock thought for a moment as he stood up and moved the two cups to the kitchen to be cleaned later. There were two options really. She could come by the day after tomorrow or in the later half of the night the day after that. "If two days from now in the second half of the night works for you that would be perfect for me. I would be on my way home from a job and the training should be a good way to tone down the evening."
He blinked in confusion then offered a hand to escort Mildred down to the door. Ellen could be heard failing to hold in a snicker.

"That works for me," Mildred said, some of her eagerness apparant in her voice. It wasn't like she had shit else to do... ever. She made a note of the date and time and would be adding it to her calendar as soon as she got home. Having something to plan around would definitely be refreshing, especially if it was something she was actually looking forward to. For too long the only thing to add to her calendar was 'rent due' and such things.
She looked at the offered hand. Well, that wasn't exactly what she had meant, and it felt just a little condescending, but... She placed her hand in his and followed him out.
"Thank you again, Varnock." She said, once they were down to the door. "I will see you soon." Even the words felt foreign to her. With that, she slipped out the door, and started the long walk home. There was plenty of time before sunrise, so she'd be alright, but even if it did take her too long there were plenty of places that she could hide for the day in a place like New York City. She felt the lingering warmth in her palm where she had let herself be led out, and tried hard not to think about it.
